Young Scot welcomes new CEO at Scottish Parliament launch event

Young Scot has welcomed Dr John Loughton BEM as its new Chief Executive, as the organisation launched its new long-term vision at an event at the Scottish Parliament.

John, a third sector leader, social entrepreneur and leadership consultant, took up the role in early 2026. He joins Young Scot after serving as Chief Executive of leadership company Dare2Lead and previously founding and running charity Scran Academy.

With more than 20 years’ experience across the third sector, John has held senior leadership roles with organisations including The Prince’s Trust, Relate and Fairbridge, and currently serves as a Trustee of The Robertson Trust and Turn2Us. Earlier in his career, he chaired the Scottish Youth Parliament and has previously worked with Young Scot.

He has spoken on global platforms including the United Nations General Assembly, TED and The White House, and has advised successive governments on youth issues, education and social change.

John joins the organisation at a significant moment, following the launch of Young Scot’s new vision at the Scottish Parliament. The vision sets out Young Scot’s ambition that all young people in Scotland are connected to the information, opportunities and experiences they need to live happy and fulfilling lives.

The event brought that vision to life, with young people sharing first-hand how being part of Young Scot has helped them build confidence, influence decisions and access new opportunities. Highlights included a powerful and thought-provoking poem penned for the event from Young Scot Award winner Muminah Koleoso and inspiring stories from young volunteers Gia and Blessing, about the real impact of youth participation.

Speaking about his appointment, Young Scot CEO John Loughton said:

“Scotland’s young people deserve power, opportunity and respect, and I am absolutely committed to helping ensure their voices are heard and their rights upheld.

Young Scot is an established and trusted change-maker. I’m excited to work with the brilliant Young Scot team, our partners and, most importantly, young people themselves to ensure we continue to be a positive presence and partner for young people across Scotland.”

As Young Scot looks ahead, John’s leadership will help build on our strong foundations working with young people, partners and communities to deliver meaningful, lasting impact.
