Young Scot gets on board with Midland Bluebird to help connect young people to their local communities

Award-winning independent bus operator partners with Young Scot to increase access to local discounts for young people.

We’ve teamed up with McGill’s Bus Group to give young people more opportunities to connect with their communities by promoting local high street discounts they can access using their Young Scot National Entitlement Cards (Young Scot NEC).

Young Scot NEC holders can take advantage of the Young Persons’ Free Bus Travel Scheme on all Midland Bluebird and the wider McGill’s Bus Group, including Xplore Dundee, BrightBus Airport Express and McGill’s local buses in the west of Scotland – and snap a discount on everything from the V&A in Dundee to Stirling Castle.

Young people can also travel free on FlixBus Scottish intercity coach network, also run by McGill’s Bus Group, and save elsewhere globally. Flixbus offers low-cost intercity services via 400,000 routes to over 5,000 destinations in more than 40 countries worldwide.

We launched our new partnership at The Falkirk Wheel, where young people can travel via Midland Bluebird routes 7/8 from Falkirk to Ochiltree Terrace or from Glasgow on the X37 Swift to Millennium Wheel Drive – both stops are a short walking distance from the entrance.

The Young Scot NEC also gives young people access to a 20% discount at The Falkirk Wheel cafe and gift shop as well as money off activities such as archery, water zorbing, boat trips and stand-up paddleboarding.

Young Scot CEO Kirsten Urquhart said:

“Providing opportunities for young people to save money locally helps them to connect with their communities – whilst also supporting local businesses.

“Partnering with McGill’s Bus Group to champion free bus travel for young people and using the Young Scot NEC to save money locally is at the heart of our goal to support young people to thrive and make the most of their lives as they grow up.”

Alex Hornby, Group Managing Director at McGill’s Bus Group said:

“We are keen to grow demand for bus travel and our work with Young Scot is ensuring that all under 22s enjoy the benefits of free bus travel and the easy access we can provide to great local attractions.

“Right across Scotland, our bus and coach networks give young people the opportunities to access work, education and leisure. With the recent news that motor insurance costs are reaching levels of up to £1,000 more than last year for young people, it means that more than ever travelling by bus and coach for free is a complete no brainer.”

Scottish Canals Chief Executive Officer John Paterson said:

“Our young people play an important part in Scottish Canals’ future and we are delighted to be able to support this partnership.

“The Falkirk Wheel is one of the canal network’s most eye-catching features and we would encourage everyone to come and pay us a visit.”
