Young Scot Awards: winners slay the spotlight
The 2025 awards hit different celebrating Scotland’s most inspiring young people in a ceremony full of heartfelt stories – none more moving than that of superstar volunteer Ellie Hodge, crowned Young Scot of the Year.
From quiet self-doubt to community champion, Ellie, 15 from Alloa, has transformed her personal challenges into a powerful force for good. Her journey inspired a standing ovation at the awards, as she was presented the overall award by Minister for Children, Young People and The Promise, Ms Natalie Don-Innes.
Demonstrating compassion and initiative, Ellie, who also won the Health and Wellbeing award, learned Makaton to communicate with non-verbal students and undertook Sighted Guide training to provide further support to her peers.
Ellie’s dedication doesn’t end at the school gates. She volunteers with Active Stirling, helping plan holiday camps and coaching inclusive football sessions where her calm, patient approach empowers every child to shine. She also gives her time to Guide Dogs Scotland and leads dance fitness classes for adults with additional support.
Ellie said:
Winning the Young Scot of the Year award feels amazing – it’s such an honour to be recognised for something I’m truly passionate about. For a long time, my shyness held me back, but I’ve learned that sometimes the greatest strength comes from stepping outside your comfort zone.
Giving my time to help others, especially those who face challenges, has made me more confident and connected than I ever imagined. I hope my story shows that even small steps can lead to big change.
Attended by young people from every corner of Scotland, the fun-filled event pitched perfectly for young people was hosted by Capital DJ Katy J at Platform in Glasgow featuring a live DJ, mocktail reception and silent disco. Wellwishers were also treated to a performance by finalists Afristyle Dance from Aberdeen.
First Minister John Swinney, who shared a message of congratulations, said:
Ellie is the embodiment of resilience, kindness and leadership. Her work supporting others, particularly those with additional needs, is not only inspiring but deeply impactful. She is a shining example of how Scotland’s young people are changing lives and building stronger communities.
Congratulations to the finalists and to young people from every corner of Scotland. Thank you for what you are doing to help your communities, for your dedication, your enthusiasm and for going above and beyond to make Scotland the place we want it to be – a place of connection, kindness and compassion.
The Young Scot Awards is Scotland’s only national awards event dedicated to celebrating the achievements of 11 to 26-year-olds. The event spotlights the positive power of young people, shifting narratives and providing role models who challenge stereotypes and inspire future generations.
Young Scot CEO Kirsten Urquhart said:
Every day, we see young people making a powerful, positive impact - leading change in their communities, supporting others and showing extraordinary resilience. The Young Scot Awards is a vital reminder that the narrative must reflect this reality - young people are generous, driven and deeply committed to making a difference.
Ellie’s story is just one example of how, when supported and celebrated, our young people become powerful drivers of change. The energy, positivity and unity at this event is a true reflection of the Scotland we are building together.
Host and Capital DJ, Katy J added:
It’s honestly such a joy to be part of the Young Scot Awards again. I always leave feeling so inspired by the energy, passion and kindness of young people. They are doing the most incredible things, often quietly, without expecting recognition. That’s why nights like this matter so much, to shine a light on their stories.
Alongside the awards, I adore working on the Young Scot podcast ‘This is How AyeFeel’ - it’s continually inspiring to hear from and celebrate the amazing young people of Scotland. Huge shoutout to Young Scot for always backing them, and for giving us all a reason to celebrate the next generation.
