COP26 Youth Climate Programme

The Background

Fifty young climate activists from across Scotland have joined forces to create Scotland’s official COP26 Youth Climate Programme.

Supported by the Scottish Government, the new programme was co-designed by a national steering group of young climate activists to help solve the climate crisis by equipping other young Scots with the knowledge, skills, and confidence to engage with the COP26 climate change summit in Glasgow.

The project is facilitated by Young Scot, Keep Scotland Beautiful and YouthLink Scotland, working collaboratively to ensure young people’s voices are heard as the nation prepares to host COP26. The youth-led project will help young Scots engage in climate action and provide opportunities to work with decision-makers on these issues.

The national group of young people are responsible for co-designing and guiding the programme’s four pillars of work:

  • online youth summit

  • local champions programme

  • carbon literacy training

  • project legacy

 The Local Champions Programme

Ten local champions are being recruited from each local authority area in Scotland to create a network of 320 climate activists. This work means that young people from many different backgrounds and communities from across Scotland can come together to take part in tailored training programmes.

The series of online climate emergency training seminars is being delivered in partnership between YouthLink Scotland and Keep Scotland Beautiful. It’s accredited by strategic partner in Scotland - the Carbon Literacy Project. Additional funding to local authorities will support the local champions to develop and deliver a co-designed local climate action project, involving a larger, more diverse, group of young people that builds a legacy of COP26.
